CBED - CPD Event for Teachers

HomeEducationProjectsArchiveCBED - CPD Event for Teachers

In July 2010, tutors of the Construction and Built Environment Diploma in the South West were invited to take part in a CPD event at Colston Hall, an exciting contemporary cultural building in central Bristol.

Professional guest speakers included: Architect Will Lakin of the University of Plymouth, Urban Designer Finlay McNab of Sustrans and Planner Clare Hennessey of the Homes and Communities Agency. Each explained what their job involved and the route they took to get into their professional careers.

The tutors were given a tour of Colston Hall’s new foyer building and the original music halls. The tour provided a fantastic opportunity for tutors to explore the Design Quality Indicator (DQI) question cards. This resource of 24 question cards:

  • considers the 3 design principles of: functionality, build quality and impact
  • helps people interrogate or explore a building
  • can be used by students on their school/college buildings and grounds, or on an exemplar/other building which they are visiting
  • were developed for school building projects but can be a useful teaching tool to explore all aspects of any building

Tutors were also given a range given of useful resources and information about built environment education:

  • Architecture Centre Bristol
  • Engaging Places
  • CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment)
  • Spaceshaper 9-14
  • RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects)

The Architecture Centre would like to acknowledge the kind support of CABE, Arts Council and the Ernest Cook Trust for this event.
