Architecture for Everyone

HomeEducationProjectsArchitecture for Everyone

Architecture for Everyone was a nationwide 3 year campaign to empower young people from black and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, females, and those from socially excluded communities to consider and pursue a career in architecture and urban design.

Architecture for Everyone was founded on the belief that built environment professionals who reflect the diversity of the society they serve, have a better chance of creating a built environment that meets the needs of that society.

Architecture for Everyone aims:

  • In the short term: to generate interest in architecture and the built environment among young people
  • In the medium term: to lead an industry-wide change which increases diversity in the profession
  • Now and in the future: to ensure that the profession is equipped to design economically and environmentally sustainable communities that meet the needs of society

Architecture for Everyone in the South West

During March 2011, the Architecture Centre, Bristol delivered the South West Architecture for Everyone programme. The Bristol project was part of a wider national programme involving over 150 young people from across seven cities and comprised of:

  • A built environment careers workshop at UWE
  • A three day ‘Academy of Architecture’ workshop programme with pupils from the City Academy

Academy of Architecture

The Academy of Architecture workshop programme saw young people learning about the city in which they live, and developing design schemes that would improve it in the future. It was delivered with Year 8/9 pupils from the City Academy in Bristol and was supported by local built environment professionals and graduates.

“The students and staff had a fantastic time over the 3 days.” Head of Art, City Academy

With thanks to the volunteers who supported the Academy of Architecture: Lawrence Duck , Imogen Hogg, Sarah Barnes and Vikenta Petuskaite

Built Environment Careers Day

The Architecture Centre worked in partnership with the Department of Planning and Architecture at the University of the West of England (UWE) to deliver an exciting careers day for young people aged 13-19 years from across the region.

The day involved 30 students from over 15 schools and colleges in Bristol and beyond, working alongside a range of inspiring built environment professionals to gain an understanding of their career roles.

The aim of the event was to give the young people the opportunity to:

  • Meet built environment professionals
  • Meet architecture and planning university students
  • Take part in a range of hands-on workshops
  • Visit a local university
  • Learn more about built environment careers/career routes

With thanks to the professionals who supported the day: Terry Pinto, Mark Preston, Alex Nelson, , Laura Morris, Katherine Chapman, Ingrid Chauvet, Rachel Sara, Griff Bunce.

“I really enjoyed my day and learnt a lot.” College Student

”My son was buzzing with enthusiasm when he returned from the event.” Parent of participant
