CBE Diploma Sustainable Design Challenge

HomeEducationProjectsArchiveCBE Diploma Sustainable Design Challenge

In June 2010, forty five pupils studying for Level Two of the Construction and Built Environment Diploma (CBED) took part in a sustainable school design challenge day at UWE.

The students were from City of Bristol College and the Kingswood Partnership of schools and the event was part of CABE’s national Green Day initiative for schools.

The challenge was to generate ideas to make ‘Forest School’ more environmentally sustainable. Working in teams the students took on the role of Architects, Landscape Architects and Energy Consultants. The students were provided with a resource pack which included:

  • Inspirational images of sustainable schools design features
  • Quotes from the users of ‘Forest School’ giving more detailed information on what needed to be improved
  • Images and an aerial plan of ‘Forest School’
  • Introductory presentation on sustainable schools

The key areas the students were asked to develop ideas and designs for were:

  • Design for the new learning support teaching space
  • Design/ideas for making the outside spaces/school grounds more sustainable
  • Design/ideas for reducing the energy usage of the school

Each group worked with a Built Environment professional and a UWE student mentor to give additional expert advice.

Using drawings and written information the students produced ‘concept boards’ to show how they would make ‘Forest School’ more sustainable. At the end of the session they presented their new designs, adaptations and recommendations about how the pupils, teachers and community could create a sustainable learning environment and use less energy.

The students were given feedback by the tutors and BE professionals based on a set of criteria:

  • How well they worked as a team – good communication/collaboration
  • Development of original design ideas
  • Clear communication of ideas
  • Response to the detail of the design brief
  • Demonstrating of a good understanding of sustainability issues

This event forms part of the Architecture Centre’s CBED support programme delivered with funding from CABE and the Ernest Cook Trust.
