Building in Context

HomeDesign actionDesign championsBuilding in Context

Building in Context training is specially designed to help members and officers understand the issues that surround designing in historically sensitive areas.

In 2009, in partnership with the Architecture Centre for Devon and Cornwall (ACD+C) we ran events in Gloucester and Totnes for councillors and planning officers from across the region. The events were funded by CABE and English Heritage and used the Building in Context toolkit which was devised by Kent Architecture Centre.

In Gloucester we used the masterplan for the Blackfriars area as a case study to explore ways of developing this city centre site, which contains hugely valuable historic buildings and offers a prime opportunity for a new public space. In previous years we have run events featuring the PrincessHay development in Exeter and the SS Great Britain museum site in Bristol.
