Design Your Neighbourhood

Jaunuary - March 2013
The Architecture Centre is pleased to have been selected as a design partner for the Design Council CABE’s Design Your Neighbourhood programme.
Design Your Neighbourhood (DYN) helps community groups get professional expertise to improve design in their neighbourhoods. Local communities know their neighbourhoods best and are full of enthusiasm and ideas for ways to make their neighbourhoods look and feel better.
The DYN programme matches community groups with local design organisations which provide expertise in architecture, planning or urban design. Working together they turn local ideas and aspirations for a better neighbourhood into action.
Re-claiming and Re-making Redcliffe Way
Redcliffe Way is a busy, 4-lane former dual carriageway that slices the surrounding neighbourhood in half. There is no centre and little sense of place or shared space. Instead there is a temporary car park and an oversupply of tarmac. The people in Redcliffe we want to change that and create a promenade of public space, a proper neighbourhood heart and a fitting gateway welcoming people to Bristol city centre.
Working with representatives of the Redcliffe community in Bristol, the Architecture Centre is helping to provide built environment expertise to develop the community’s ideas towards transforming Redcliffe Way.
A design review session and a co design workshop with local residents will be supported by a cross section of expert built environment professionals including: Jan Gehl, David Mackay, Andrew Grant, Peter Clegg, Ben Hamilton-Baillie, Chris Brown and Richard Silverman.
As part of the project a consultation exhibition will be on display at the Architecture Centre (20 Feb – 3 March 2013) and an engaging public event with Mayor George Ferguson will take place at Arnolfini on Tuesday 22nd January (THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT).
