NATIONAL CONSTRUCTION WEEK 2005

This one day event for GCSE students was delivered in partnership with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as part of National Construction Week.

Pupils from five local schools participated in engaging day which explored the issue of environmental sustainability and enterprise within the built environment industry.

The pupils visited the eco-home at the CREATE centre to learn about environmentally friendly design features and then had the rare opportunity to go on a site visit to the Crest Nicholson development site on the Bristol Harbourside. During the site visit, the pupils learned what measures the developers are taking to make the development more sustainable, and about the detailed process of constructing a new building – from architects plans to the finished creation.

After a ferry trip to observe the range of building developments along the Bristol Harbourside, the pupils returned to @t Bristol to participate in a sustainable homes presentation challenge.

In groups the pupils researched and prepared presentations on a range of real-life eco-home developments. The buildings demonstrated various eco design elements including: photo voltaic power generation, solar water heating, turf roofs, passive solar gain, straw bale building, rammed earth building, wind turbines for power generation, organic gardening, use of recycled building materials and insulation and non-toxic paints and finishes. The pupils had to act as estate agents, persuading a particular client of the benefits of purchasing an environmentally sustainable home. They then had to deliver their presentations to a panel of judges, who selected a winner.
