THE
BIG DRAW - MEDIEVAL MASTERPIECES
As part of the national ‘Big Draw’ celebrations,
the Architecture Centre, Bristol and The Churches Conservation Trust
opened up a local medieval church to provide artistic inspiration to
local primary school pupils.
Year 5/6 pupils from Patchway and Clifton were invited to explore the
church and crypt using an art trail and were given a range of artistic
materials to experiment with. They used architectural details of the
building, the last remaining part of the old medieval city walls, to
inspire brass rubbings, plasticine gargoyles, mini stained glass windows,
personal shields and chalk sketches.
The crypt of St Johns Church, was also used as inspiration for a family
story telling workshop, exploring the past present and future uses of
this intriguing building. The event took place as part of National Storytelling
Week in January 2006.
The tomb of Sir Walter Frampton, housed within the church has also
been used as a case-study for primary school teachers in a new local
history teaching pack developed by Bristol’s Museums, Libraries,
Archives and the Architecture Centre, Bristol. For further details contact
Karin Molson at the Bristol Industrial Museum.
St John the Baptist Church is owned and managed by the Churches Conservation
Trust and is available for educational visits. For further details or
to book a visit contact Bob Henby on 0117 9780642.
