CABE EDUCATION & ARCHITECTURE CENTRE NETWORK
Regional
Networking Education Seminar 2005
This successful half-day event for local Secondary Geography and
Citizenship teachers focused on how the redevelopment of the Bristol
Harbourside can be used to deliver Sustainable Development and
fieldwork curriculum opportunities.
Organised and hosted by the Architecture Centre, Bristol, in
partnership with Connexions and Planning Aid, the event included
presentations from a range of local Built Environment and Education
professionals:
-
Skills for Sustainable Communities - Mary-Jane Edwards,
Planning Aid Southwest
-
The Sustainable Communities Agenda - Steve Marriot, Sustainable
Cities
-
Young People and Active Citizenship - Pete Davies, Community
at Heart
-
Citizenship and the Historic Environment- Amanda Feather,
English Heritage
-
Liveable Neighbourhoods Project - Alex Allen, Sustrans
-
The Development of the Bristol Harbourside - Richard Holden,
Bristol Planning Department
-
Using Bristol Harbourside as a Teaching Resource - Garry
Atterton, Castle School
The
second part of the afternoon involved delegates in a practical
planning exercise, which looked at the issues of bringing pupils
out on field work visits to Bristol Harbourside. Elements such
as pre trip preparation, resources, timing, health and safety
considerations, citizenship/cross curricular links, support from
other agencies and professionals were discussed. The outcomes
from this session will feed into the development of a new resource
to support Key Stage 4 teachers bringing their pupils down to
the Bristol harbourside for curriculum visits.
‘A very valuable afternoon, scheduled at a very useful
time in the year for me.’ Phillip Amor, Geography Teacher,
QEH School
‘A wide range of interesting speakers and the workshop
was very valuable - particularly the view of the architect.’
Garaeth Churchill, Geography Teacher, Churchill School
