FOOD
FOR THOUGHT
During 2006 the Architecture Centre worked with Creative Partnerships
Forest of Dean to deliver a series of workshops with Tutshill Primary
School, Chepstow linking their new building work with the science curriculum.
The project linked the properties of building materials to the properties
of everyday food items – a fun and exciting way for pupils to
discover why particular materials are used in the construction of buildings.
The pupils then had to respond to specific design briefs and develop
presentations and models demonstrating how they had put their knowledge
of the property of materials to use in a real life design scenario.
During
the Autumn term a further workshop was delivered with Year 6. Linked
to a History curriculum unit of WW2 and a Design and Technology on structures,
the workshop explored geodomes. The pupils learned about the design
and structure of geodomes and saw examples of where they have been used
in modern building design.
The pupils then experimented with constructing structures using marshmallows
and dried spaghetti before creating their own mini geodomes and finally
a whole class large scale geodome frame.
