Home
for a Hero Project
This exciting six week project was undertaken with Year 5/6 pupils
from Patchway C of E Primary School and Clutton Primary during
the summer term 2005. The main theme for this project was the
concept of ‘home’. It explored the uniqueness of a
home, how homes vary through history and different communities,
how homes can be made more sustainable, and included a visit from
a professional architect and a site visit to a housing regeneration
site.
Outcomes
• encouraged pupils to think about the concept of ‘home’
• gave pupils an opportunity to learn about different
styles of houses from around the globe and throughout history
• encouraged pupils to think about sustainability issues
in the design of houses
• gave pupils a meaningful ‘out of classroom’
learning experience, which enabled them to learn about the roles
and activities of a live building site
• gave pupils opportunity to find out about the role of
a professional Architect
• gave children an introduction to drawing to scale
• encouraged children to think about the needs/desires
of a specific building user and reflect these in their design
• encouraged pupils to design and construct a model, working
collaboratively with partner and built environment professional
• fostered positive links between built environment professionals,
the Architecture Centre and the local primary school community
• involved 50 pupils in a cross curricular project which
used a variety of skills, both practical, intellectual and emotional
The
children were challenged to be the architects and designers for
a hero of their choice. They developed a design brief based on
the needs and desires of their hero and then developed detailed
architectural drawings and finally some creative models of the
new home for their hero.
The Architecture Centre would like to thank the following
people for their contribution to the success of the project:
Charlotte Watkins – Planner, Dreweatt Neate
Oona Goldsworthy – Chief Executive, BCHF
Nigel Eckershall – Architect, Stride Treglown
