WOMEN
IN CONSTRUCTION:
THE SKY IS THE LIMIT
This Autumn the Architecture Centre delivered a ‘Women in
Construction’ event in partnership with CITB, Connexions
West of England and Women in Property, as part of National Construction
Week.
The one-day event invited Year 12 and 13 girls from local school
sixth forms, and aimed to give them a real taste of the huge array
of career opportunities available in the property and construction
industries.
The format of the day consisted of:
-
Presentations on 21st century office design from local architect,
David Sorrel, and structural engineer, Kathy Gibbs
-
A ‘hands-on’ workshop looking at the exterior
and interior designs of 21st-century office design, with support
from local architect, Jo Hibbert, and interior designer, Hilary
Speight
-
An opportunity to quiz a whole range of mystery female professionals,
to explore what their jobs entail
-
An informative boat trip looking at the redevelopment of
Bristol Harbourside
-
A site visit to the Kier HBOS office scheme under development
on Bristol Harbourside
-
Presentation of models and learning outcomes from the day
and an award ceremony
The event was a great success with pupils and industry professionals
alike gaining valuable experience. A second similar event is planned
for early 2005, so if your school is interested in taking part,
please contact Education Officer Amy Harrison on 0117 9221540
or email amy.harrison@architecturecentre.co.uk
