Convivial spaces

July - September 2007

What makes a convivial public space? To celebrate Urban Design Week we invited visitors to make a short walking tour around central Bristol and give us their verdict on some of the city’s most prominent public spaces. The survey results fed into a research project by Henry Shaftoe from the University of the West of England. Shaftoe’s book, Convivial Spaces, is now available from the Architecture Centre shop.

The survey was accompanied by the exhibition Comfort & Joy, which explored positive approaches to the design of public spaces.
