THE
RECKLESS ENGINEER
Talk: Alistair Lenczner, Foster and Partners
Arnolfini, Bristol
Thursday 22 June, 6pm £6/4.50
As Brunel’s 200 anniversary is commemorated, it seems apposite
to reflect upon how attitudes have changed towards the engineering
world both from the viewpoint of the public and from those working
within the engineering profession. Some clear differences would
seem to be apparent. Whereas engineers in Victorian times could
be seen as swashbuckling heroes who helped forge a social revolution
with their bold designs using new materials and methods, their
modern day counterparts have become a seemingly invisible hand
whose work is constrained by codification and attitudes towards
risk. Within the realities of the contemporary construction industry
is there any place for the spirit of the ‘Reckless Engineer’?
