BIOMIMICRY
Thursday 6 May, 12.30-14.00

Biomimicry (from bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to
imitate) is a new science that studies nature’s best ideas
and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems.
For example, studying a leaf to invent a better solar cell. It
is “innovation inspired by nature”.
The profile for biomimicry in the design world is increasing.
Parallel to this is an increasing demand for designers to be aware
of its potential in order to integrate it into their design repertoire.
In response to the observations that biomimicry has a huge potential
to influence our future work and design thinking, Arup Foresight
+ Innovation invited three of the world’s leading practitioners
in biomimetics (two biologists and one architect) to speak at
a one day “Arup Explores Biomimicry” workshop. The
lecture will explore how Arup designs are being influenced by
the emerging discipline of Biomimicry.
