15 July - 7 September 2008

In August, Urban Splash and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) launched an international architecture competition that gave designers the chance of lifetime to create an exciting development for a fantastic island.

The site is none other than Weston-super-Mare, the only island with a connecting pier in Britain.

Weston-super-Mare was once one of the great seaside destinations, with tourists flocking to the resort. Yet like many seaside towns in Britain, Weston has been affected by changes in tourism and the growth of package holidays and is no longer the destination it once was.

Urban Splash has used this international architecture competition to seek a design team bursting with inspiration and ideas to work with it in bringing life back to Birnbeck.

Six stunning designs have been short listed and illustrate how the creative vision for the redevelopment of Birnbeck Island could be central to the regeneration of the island itself as well as Weston-super-Mare as a whole.

The short listed design teams include FLACQ Architects, London; Levitate Architecture & Design Studio Ltd, London; MOH Architects, Vienna; Pierre d’Avoine / White Young Green Planning & Design, Cardiff; and Richards Partington Architects, London.

The winners will be announced in March 2008, and it is Urban Splash's intention to build the winning design.
