CONVIVIAL
SPACES
Exhibition: Tuesday 17 January - Sunday 12 February
Talk: Thursday 26 January, 18.00, £6/4.50
What makes some public spaces so pleasurable that people flock
to them and want to linger there?
Examples of well-peopled spaces from throughout Europe and elsewhere
are shown in this exhibition, as a starting point for understanding
the essence of conviviality.
Can such places be 'designed' or do they have to be 'grown' or
developed through some other means?
To what extent are convivial spaces a result of physical design,
as compared with location or management?
We would like to hear your views, which you can offer by completing
the questionnaire and/or doing a circular walk round some of the
public spaces in central Bristol and then giving us your comments
on the form provided. There will also be a presentation and discussion
at 6pm on Thursday 26 January. We hope that the outcome of all
your feedback will be some policy and practice guidance that will
help to improve public spaces in Bristol and beyond. The exhibition
and talk have been put together by Henry Shaftoe, Cities Research
Centre, Faculty of the Built Environment, University of the West
of England.
