CRITICAL PATH

Exhibition: Tuesday 6 December – Sunday 15 January

Students from the University of the West of England Architecture and Planning degree course have been asked to research, design and build a geodesic dome to be exhibited at Arnolfini alongside the ‘Starting at Zero: Black Mountain College 1933-57’ exhibition. The group of artists and architects that came together at Black Mountain College during this period included Buckminster Fuller, who taught at the college in 1948-9 and first developed the geodesic dome there.

The students will develop the dome from initial paper models, research into a range of geometries and materials, manufacturing of components and final assembly of the dome in Arnolfini gallery. Documentation of this process will form the basis of the exhibition at The Architecture Centre, which will trace the students’ progress through photography, recording models and different manufacturing processes, and through video.

Arnolfini are hosting a Geodesic Dome Day on Saturday 7 January, 11.00-15.00.
Using different materials domes of all sizes and styles will be built throughout Arnolfini during the day. This activity is suitable for people of all ages - come along and take part or watch the Domes take shape. An Arnolfini family-friendly event. This event is free
