Artist Mark Halliday will be out on the Redclif quayside at Bristol
art space Station making a large-scale temporary public sculpture
based around the façade of the tiny 19th century fireboat
building. The project will unfold throughout August and September,
coinciding with Bristol Doors Open Day on the 10th September.

The title of the sculpture, FALSEWORK, is taken from the name
given to any scaffolding or support that is destroyed after completion
of the erection of an architectural feature or construction.
FALSEWORK is part of an on-going exploration by Halliday of the
nature of temporary structures in building and construction. This
is in keeping with a wider interest in raw materials and pragmatic
decision-making. The work he makes is produced utilising a mixture
of highly developed acquired skills and an amateur improvisation,
through which he can make enquiries into basic ideas concerning
the language of sculpture.
The show is accompanied by a catalogue and essay by Dr Jonathan
Clarkson.
Mark Halliday studied painting at Birmingham and then sculpture
and bronze casting at the Royal College of Art. He currently teaches
sculpture at University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
STATION, situated by Redcliffe Caves on Phoenix Wharf, is a contemporary
artists’ space. Originally a fireman’s hut, Station
now offers opportunities for artists to respond to the building,
it’s history and the changing situation of the docks.
