IN THE MAKING: A PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTARY OF THE BUILDING OF THE
NEW SPA CENTRE IN BATH, UK
Exhibition: Tues 3 February – Sun 14 March 2004
Private View: Wed 11 February 18.00 20.00
Lecture: Thursday 4 March 19.00 £6/4.50
After a quarter of a century of closure, the thermal springs
of Bath will once again be used for bathing and treatment, as
was the case 2000 years ago. Since the start of construction in
2000, Carlo Chinca has been the photographer-in-residence, funded
by the Bath Spa Project and Bath City Council. He was given an
open brief by Paul Simons (Director of the project at the time)
to visit the site at regular intervals to make a photo-essay –
mostly in black and white – of the construction progress,
emphasising the human endeavour. His aim was to be unobtrusive
and capture candid moments in the life of the building and construction
workers. History in the Making is an exclusive photographic archive
that will benefit generations to come. It is an unique and privileged
view, given that without the acceptance of the photographer by
the workers and management the documentary would not have been
possible.
This exhibition has been kindly sponsored by Mowlem.
A lecture supporting the exhibition and exploring issues surround
this monumental 6-year project will take place on Thursday 4 March.
Speakers include Carlo Chinca, photographer-in-residence, Peter
Carey, conservation architect at Donald Insall, and Paul Simons,
ex-Director of the project and Chairman of the British Spa Federation.
Please contact The Architecture Centre to book a place (£6/£4.50).
