IMAGEM
Exhibition: Fri 18 June - Sun 18 July
Knowle West Media
Centre (KWMC) is an independent organisation and charity that
uses media as a tool to involve young people in the regeneration
of their communities, to build skills and create opportunities
for participation in initiatives that promote social, cultural
and economic development.
The ‘Imagem’ project came out of links between Bristol
and one of its twin cities, Oporto, Portugal. The young people
of KWMC have become interested in architecture as their building
is in the process of being demolished and rebuilt. Seven 11-16
year olds from Knowle West visited a school in the Rio Tinto area
of Oporto and joined forces with eight Portuguese counterparts.
The work developed into an examination of bridges, as the twin
cities have so many ways of crossing water, and truly explores
‘the way we live’, this year’s Architecture
Week theme.
The exhibition is a collection of photographs of Bristol and
Oporto, all taken by the young people involved in the project
with a variety of disposable, digital and SLR cameras.
