JOINEDUPDESIGNFORSCHOOLS
Exhibition: Thursday 16 March - Tuesday 25 April
Event: Monday 20 March
joinedupdesignforschools joins client teams of pupils with the
UK's leading design practices to provide solutions for practical
improvements in schools, develop pupils' life skills, and highlight
the benefits of a partnership between the design industry and
education.
The joinedupdesignforschools initiative has proved an immensely
valuable research exercise,
identifying fourteen common complaints that pupils have about
their schools (such as the need for dedicated social space, to
safe, vandal-proof toilets, and modern, comfortable school uniforms).
10,000 pupils in over 60 schools have benefited from the programme,
with nearly 700 pupils directly involved in individual projects.
Several joinedupdesignforschools projects from the Bristol area
will feature in this exhibition, including architect Phin Manasseh
who proposed a multi-functional structure for the playground at
Fairfield High School, Montpelier; Alsop Architects who created
an inspiring social and work space for the Hartcliffe Engineering
Community College sixth form, and an outdoor sheltered activity
area for Withywood Community College; FAT (Fashion Architecture
Taste) who created a freestanding art gallery and outdoor shelter
for Speedwell Technology College; Azman Associates Architects
who developed ideas for a creative, multipurpose, outdoor space
at Whitefield Fishponds Community School.
On
Monday 20 March,The Sorrell Foundation will host a strategic forum
which will include presentations from Chris Bissell, Principal
Architect, School Capital and Buildings Division at the DfES,
John Sorrell and pupils from local schools. The forum aims to
generate discussion of how the joinedupdesignforschools process
can feed into Building Schools for the Future (BSF) in the South
West and demonstrate the advantages of engaging pupils in the
process, and is open to anyone with an interest in school design
and Building Schools for the Future. Places are free, but are
limited. To reserve a place, please email events@thesorrellfoundation.com
