PLACE / A study of Modern houses in Cornwall
Sophie Tarbuck
Exhibition: Main Gallery
17 June – 24 August 2008
PLACE, Sophie Tarbuck’s solo exhibition at The Architecture Centre, Bristol, is the culmination of a year-and-a-half long project to produce a body of work exploring the relationship between art and architecture, and the influences these two disciplines have on one another.
Based on extensive field work, interviews and research, Sophie’s paintings, collages and drawings form an enquiry into Modern houses in Cornwall, such as Creek Vean and Pillwood in Feock, Tregannick near Penzance and Polventon at Trevose. Notes, photographs, drawings, interviews, oral histories, plans and archived information gathered over the past year and a half have all informed the work – sometimes becoming integral parts of the work itself.
Sophie has recently begun to explore and extend the diagrammatic vocabulary of her work through collage, incorporating Letrafilm and Letratone in order to capture the essence and honesty of a working drawing. In the context of the work, this application reinterprets the methods involved in communicating ideas, and links past practices with contemporary design and architecture.
There is an 80 page catalogue available accompanying the exhibition which includes essays by Jeremy Gould, Toby Paterson and Albert Hill. It also details houses in the study, interviews with residents, designers and architects. There are full colour illustrations throughout and is available in an edition of 250.
