REDLAND
CHAPEL AND THOMAS PATY
Exhibition: Tuesday 6 September – Sunday 16 October
Redland Chapel, Redland Green, Bristol was built as a private
chapel by John and Martha Cossins. They had purchased and rebuilt
Redland Court (now part of Redland High School) between 1732 and
1735. Some of the earliest recorded work carried out by Thomas
Paty (1713-89) was the stone carving of the exterior ornamentation
on the Chapel which appears to have been started in 1740. His
more substantial contribution was the wooden carving on the interior,
in particular the ornamentation of the Chancel, completed shortly
before the Chapel was opened in October 1743.
A comprehensive photographic survey of these carvings has been
made as part of the current restoration project. In addition to
enabling the detail of the carving to be appreciated, the Exhibition
covers the history of the Chapel in the context of the development
of Redland as a suburb of Bristol.
