Green Space and Green Infrastructure
The Architecture Centre, Bristol, Groundwork South West and Feilden
Clegg Bradley Studios wish to offer up to four commissions for
work from artists and/or design professionals relating to our
Spring Green Programme 2009.
Spring Green is The Architecture Centre’s annual programme
of events and exhibitions that celebrates and promotes sustainable
innovation in the built environment. For 2009 our theme is urban
green space and green infrastructure: the physical network of
green spaces between and within our cities, towns and villages,
as well as the linkages between them.
A focal point of Spring Green 2009 will be a programme of artwork
exploring some of the issues related to urban green spaces. Up
to four commissions are available for artists and creative teams
who can engage with the key aims of the Spring Green programme.
We would be interested in hearing from:
* Artists working in any discipline whose work engages with the
natural and designed/built environment
* Artist/built environment practitioner teams with pre-existing
collaborations
The project will be coordinated from a creative ‘hub’
based at The Architecture Centre in Bristol, however the work
may take place in or around the wider Bristol area.
For more information and to download the call for submissions,
see above. The deadline for submissions is 17 December 2008.
2. Planting Places Awards 2009
The second Planting Places awards will highlight and celebrate
top examples of green space across the South West, and recognise
the input and influence of these spaces in supporting sustainable
communities.
As well as an overall award, this year’s ‘best practice
awards’ will highlight: Engaging the Community, Supporting
Biodiversity, Managing Flood Risk, Promoting Health & Well
Being and Responding to Climate Change.
The winning schemes will be exhibited here at The Architecture
Centre in March/April 2009 as part of the Spring Green 2009 programme.
The exhibition will then travel to partner organisations across
the region for display.
Visit the Planting Places website for more information and to
apply:

The deadline for applications is 5pm, Tuesday 27 January 2009.
3. RIBA Carol Service
RIBA Bristol & Bath Branch invites you to join their annual
carol service on Friday 12th December at 6pm. The service takes
place at St. James’ Priory, Whitson Street, Bristol.
Featuring The Ammonites choir, conducted by Julian Hannam, and
the Music for Architecture string quartet, the festivities are
open to everyone. After the service mince pies & hot punch
will be served, followed by drinks at the Colston Yard, Colston
Street.
4. CABE Space 2009 design skills scholarships
CABE Space has announced that applications are now open its annual
design skills scholarship programme offering up to six people
who work in the public realm the opportunity to travel abroad
to learn from fellow professionals how a well-designed space can
benefit the community it serves.

5. Bristol Walkable City
Bristol has been awarded European City of the Year 2009 by the
Academy of Urbanism:

And to make it an even better city, Bristol City Council is conducting
a consultation into how to improve and promote walking in Bristol.
To take part in the consultation, which closes on Wednesday 17
December, visit the Bristol City Council website:

As part of The Architecture Centre’s programme looking at
urban design, we held an event back in September looking at how
to make Bristol more ‘walkable’:

The debate was filmed and is available to view online:
