1. Sustainable Suburbia: Density and the suburban dream
Talk/debate: Thursday 1 May - 18.30 - £5 (£3 concessions)

How can we make most effective use of suburban land? Former RIBA president Sir Richard MacCormac believes that the ‘suburban dream’ can be achieved by building at much higher densities than is currently the norm. Here he presents the findings of his practice’s recent Sustainable Suburbia report and ongoing research into how a ‘three dimensional’ planning approach could create sustainable garden suburbs that are both walkable and well-connected.

Booking is essential. To book, please send an email marked 'Tickets - Sustainable Suburbia' to info@architecturecentre.co.uk or call 0117 922 1540. http://www.architecturecentre.co.uk/events/sustainable_suburbia.htm

2. Architecture South West
Events: 1 – 30 June 2008

Architecture South West is a celebration of contemporary architecture which draws on the success of previous years’ Architecture Week programmes. It gives us a chance to think about, celebrate and, most of all, to experience architecture.

Throughout June, across the South West, there will be events looking at architecture in a broader sense - from professional talks to family workshops; contemporary buildings and heritage properties; in urban landscapes and remote, rural locations.
The Architecture South West web site – http://www.awsw.org.uk - has been set up by The Architecture Centre, Bristol who are working with The Architecture Centre for Devon and Cornwall in Plymouth to encourage event organisers and to promote this site. You can add your event to the site from Monday 28 April and the site will feature events listings from early May.

The Architecture Centres in Bristol and Plymouth produce a year-round programme of activities centred on architecture and the built environment.

3. Radiant City: A documentary about urban sprawl
Film screening: Monday 12 May, 20.30
Cube Cinema, Dove Street South, Bristol BS2 8JB
£5 (£4 concessions)

Canadian film-makers Gary Burns and Jim Brown use a variety of cultural references, from Jane Jacobs to The Sopranos, to create a provocative reflection on North American suburbs and what they have become. Cinematographer Patrick McLaughlin transforms drab suburbia into eerie tableaux of dystopia.

“A funny, astute and more than slightly unsettling portrait of the drive-through life.“ Toronto Star. Winner, Special Jury Prize, Vancouver International Film Festival

Introduced by Steve Ward of Carfree UK, an organisation which works to promote car-free development. Presented in partnership with Bristol Indymedia: http://www.bristol.indymedia.org

4. The Architecture Centre shop gallery and special offers

On special offer in May, the Architecture Centre shop has 10% off Alvar Aalto vases. We also have our new spring range in stock including a new selection of Watch This Space Jewellery, a fun range of robot mugs, bowls and egg cups from the Big Tomato Company and lots more.

5. Transition City: Preparing for peak oil

Exhibition: Shop gallery
Tuesday 29 April – Sunday 8 June

In towns, villages and cities across the UK, grass roots movements are addressing the challenges of peak oil and climate change, seeking greater self-reliance in fuel, food and housing. To coincide with the publication of The Transition Handbook, this exhibition highlights some of the ways communities can ‘act local’ to bring about change in their neighbourhoods and beyond.
