ALVAR
AALTO VASE
Alvar Alto (1898-1976) was a central figure in international
modernism and the most important Finnish architect of the 20th
century. His buildings, furniture and glassware brought together
the naturalism of Finnish romanticism with modernist ideals.
In 1937 Aalto and his wife Aino Marsio were commissioned to design
the interior and furnishings of the Savoy Restaurant in the centre
of Helsinki. The 1937 Savoy vase was placed on every table, its
meandering form creating unusual floral arrangements.
The curvaceous vase, although named after the Savoy restaurant,
was originally part of Aalto’s award-winning Eskimo Woman’s
Leather Pants range of glassware, inspired, according to Aalto
by “a young Eskimo girl’s breeches”. It is now
recognised as a design classic and is still a best seller today.
